0630 - Start with George on cable ladder
George cut away the obstruction and with the help from Mark (tradesman), we were able to overcome the bend the push the cable ladder in place. That was tough.
1000 - Started on cable tray
There was also an obstruction from the cable tray linking to the cable ladder. We had to put hinges to divert the path of the tray.
I learned how to install cable ladder and today, cable tray. Very good.
1600 - Finished
I went to the Hong Kong Hardware and Tools to buy the required tool like wrench spanner for the job. It costs me $23 for three items.

Day 28 - Continue with cable ladder
Date: 24/2/2010
0630 - Started with George on cable ladder
It has been very difficult today with the installation because there were too many things on the way and the path of the cable ladder was diverting.
Left with no choice, we were forced to push in the tray from the very end just to be met with obstruction.
Sometimes, putting in one ladder plus installation required up to 2 hours.
I was supposed to follow George to the hardware shop after work, but I changed my mind. I'll do it tomorrow. George wasn't too happy.

Day 27 - Continue with cable ladder
Date: 23/2/2010
I was having trade school yesterday.
0630 - Started with George on cable ladder
If without the all the gas and aircon piping, the installation for the cable ladder should be pretty easy. Squeezing our body and climbing on top of the piping, at some point of time, has became necessary - which supposed to be an unsafe act. With a little bit of planning, all these inconvenience could be avoided.
George was becoming impatient with me lack of tools for the job. For several times, he urged me to get my own tools. He told me to get from a cheap harware store in Pooraka. I was hesitating because I'm still waiting for the tool allowance from the government which would be in voucher. Unfortunately, that would be in May. In my opinion that's too long ahead. Therefore, I've decided to get the tools by this week.

Day 26 - Overtime - Twice the pay, half the work
Date: 20/2/2010
That was what Matto said - Twice the pay, half the work. He told us to relax.
0700 - Start
I was asked to help Mark (tradesman).
0715 - Drilled holes on Unistrut
I was supposed to help Mark to install cable tray, however he didn't need my help - saying it's one man job. So I was forced to go ask Matto for new job. The new job was - drill holes on Unistrut.
After smoko, I was assigned to pick up used cable ties on the floor around the site within the building. The one who cut it supposed to practice restraint, not to drop cable ties on the floor. But no one cared.

Date: 19/2/2010
0630 - Start
0700 - Toolbox meeting
0800 - Back to work
Doing more cable ladder from the morning till finished, though was interrupted in the middle by Matto - asking me and Ben to clear the "room" where we used to cut Unistrut.
The daily forecast was 35 degC. It reached 35 degC at 1340 and we got to go off one hour early. What a day.

Day 24 - Doing more cable ladder
Date: 18/2/2010
0630 - Start work with a lesson from Matto. Yesterday, the apprentice Mark began to walk to his car at 1550. The rest of us knew it, except for Matto and George. When I was in the car with Matto and George, I told them, but they didn't believe it. Just to be sure, they went back to the site to look for apprentice Mark just to make sure that he was not left behind. Maybe Matto was pissed off. He asked us not to go early, but on time. And all must gather at the office before heading off. Everyone is required to sign in and off from tomorrow onwards.
1130 - Installing Unistrut, cutting threaded rod and joining the two cable ladders that were being separated by a steel frame. The steel frame was cut off by someone to cater for our cable ladder. That was pain in the arse trying to loosen the cable ladder to join up with the other one with all the piping blocking the access. Nevertheless, we were able to join them together - with pain in the arse.
I didn't work extra hour today because I have to go the bank to pay the rent.

Day 23 - A cable ladder expert
Date: 17/2/2010
Was having trade school on Monday and RDO on Tuesday. On Tuesday, I went to settle the electrical worker registration and also went PEER to have the Support for Adult Form signed.
I was working with George for the whole day on installing Unistrut to the ceiling.
0630 - Start
Ben was assigned to the same site as well, together with both Marks.
We were using a dodgy sizzler lift, rented from somewhere. There wasn't a gate on the sizzler lift, but a steel bar beaming across the lift, where one can lift up or down for entrance and exit to the lift. One can also "stuck" the steel bar by putting it in an angle to stop it from sliding down - for the convenience of not having to support it while accessing the lift.
That's when something went wrong. The steel bar fell on me when I was alighting from the lift. When it hit my hard hat, out of natural reaction I tried to stop it - although it was already too late. And that was when I cut my finger - bleeding. At first I thought it was my head that was bleeding. Did not report it to Baulderstone.

Day 20 - Installing cable ladder
Date: 13/2/2010
Today was my first OT at HC2. It was more rewarding than the previous 2 days, because besides cutting Unistrut, I got to assist in the installation of cable ladder with George.
Most of the time, I was just passing tools to George and observing the installation process. Observation is an important task as an apprentice. Because the tradesman will suddenly ask you what's the next step or the sequence of putting in the nuts, washers and bolt. Although tempted to fall asleep, staying on alert should the way of doing it.
To install cable ladder, we need:
1. Unistrut - the length depending on where we want to mount them. The Unistrut used to mount onto the ceiling must have holes, and the Unistrut used to support the cable need not have holes - because the channel on the Unistrut will do the job with the help a channel nut - great design!
2. Threaded rod - we need 2 of them - the length depend on the application
3. Nuts - 4 of them
4. Washers - 4 of them
5. Square washer - 2 of them
6. Channel nut - 2 of them
We were doing a very dangerous job today - trying to put a 6 metres cable tray onto a position which was impossible to fit. There were no proper tools to perform the job. We had to move the cable tray up to the scissor lift with George in the lift and me pushing the tray to him from the ground. The tray was not light! It was just too dangerous. What if George slips? The cable tray will crush onto me. Luckily when we were doing that, a plumber spotted us performing the dangerous job and offered us a tool - the lifter. It was much easier after that but still - dangerous.
After getting it on top the lift, we pushed it to the roof, and from the roof trying to slide it back to the little slot where the tray supposed to lie - with a huge inclination. With a little calculation, before doing it, I already know there was no way of succeeding - because of the piping blocking underneath. But when the tradesman insisted, you can't say no.
In the end, George decided to cut the cable ladder into half. We brought it down and cut it. This process of trial and error took us 2 hours, which could have been avoided with a little bit of calculation.
1300 - Finished - According to Matto, we got to get out from the site before 1300 otherwise, we'll be locked in! That's why we left at 1240. So good.

Date: 8/2/2010
I was back to the trade school - TAFE today. Ashton Young is in the same class with me. I also get to know several new friends. One of them was Eric Chua, a Singaporean. He was asking a question in the class, and I thought he was from Cambodia. With his English, he didn't sound like Singaporean.
Subjects:
1. Earthing with AS3000
2. Single and Three Phase Circuit

Day 14 - Overtime again
Date: 6/2/2010
0630 - I was asked to carry some stuffs from C1 container to Mike.
The big gate to the C1 container was locked. I and Ben had to go from the side door through the lunch room. It was quite a hassle.
0730 - Working with Caleb on the lightings at the ladies toilet.
We were busted by Mike when Burgo came down to get a ladder but ended up chatting with us. Apparently, Mike was standing behind the wall listening to our conversation before came into the toilet and bust us all. What a cunning old man!

Day 13 - Tying and twisting cables
Date: 5/2/2010
Most of the time I was working alone after Westys gave me the instruction to tie-up cables in the cable tray.
0630 - Tie cable
I did that for the whole day. Yeah, just tying up cables. The problem was not the tying, but the twisting. I have to stack up cables on top of each other and tie them. Unfortunately it was not easy to stack them up together because they were all twisted from the end. To untwist the cables take a lot of strength and energy. It also make my hands painful.
1500 - Finished
I also went to PEER to collect the hi-vis jacket. After PEER I went to Coates to check out on the temporary yellow card. I thought Coates didn't give it to me. But actually Coates didn't give it to everyone on that training day. Their excuse: Too many trainee in that session and still waiting for their director to sign the temporary license. What a joke!

Date: 4/2/2010
I worked with Westys the whole day.
0630 - Pulling cable at the Dome
I used a scissor lift today. But just to lift it up, not moving around.
0800 - Moved 'waste' cables to the C1 container
1015 - Pulling cable at the basement

Day 11 - Nearly drove a scissor lift!
Following Westys and Dave today.
0630 - Check orientation of drain holes.
I was asked to go down the basement to check the orientation of drain holes after we checked on the ground. Total 18 of them. I could only found 17 of them and they were all in the correct direction - facing Port Road.
0900 - Helping Dave to install isolator
Things needed: 20A Single phase Isolator, 25mm grey corrigated conduit, & 25mm plain to screwed adaptor
I was asked by Westys to drive a scissor lift around from the inner building to the front. I was trained to drive one, however I was not very confident to drive one, especially in such a packed environment. Luckily Ted came and told Westys that I didn't have a license to drive one.

Day 10 - Cable Tray
Date: 2/2/2010
I was following Westys today.
0630 - Pulling & pushing cables from the basement up to the ticket counter
Don't be surprise. Five apprentices and a trademan were doing the job.
1200 - Working with Dave at the plenum mounting cable tray.
I was cutting the threaded rod.
Items needed to mount cable tray: Threaded rod, tied-down anchor, and some kind of wallmates (I didn't know what was the name), nuts

Day 9 - Pallet breaking day
Date: 1/2/2010
Ben was not here today. He might be at the trade school. So I followed Simo for the whole day.
0630 - Breaking up pallet to salvage the timber used for the light poles
1500 - Finished
I was breaking the pallet for the whole. That surely made a pallet breaking expert. Initially I was salvaging the timber by whacking the pallet with hammer. It was a pretty tough job. I even sprained my wrist.
During lunch time, someone told me to use a hacksaw rather than a hammer. I heeded his advice. It was much easier and the timber didn't break up easily.
Pallet breaking - that's my whole day.
By the way, I was supposed to go to the trade school today. No one told me. Not even PEER. Actually I was told to expect the trade school to start in 3 months time. It's only 2 weeks now. That's mind-boggling. Anyway, the TAFE lecturer asked me to catch up the lesson next Monday instead.
